A BBC Radio drama based on an actual historical event. In 16th Century England during the reign of Elizabeth I, a group of Catholic gentlemen stirred up by outlawed Catholic priest John Ballard conceived a plan to assassinate the Protestant Queen and supplant her with her Catholic cousin Mary Queen of Scots. The leader of this plot was young Anthony Babington, a rather vapid young aristocrat...and the last person anyone would suspect of even thinking of trying to overthrow the government. The plot failed and almost all of the conspirators were arrested, tried for treason and executed in the most horrible method imaginable ... hanging, drawing and quartering.
