Do Animals Set Off Outdoor Motion Sensors?

In this video, Dylan explains that it is possible for animals to set off outdoor motion detectors. However, there are ways to prevent this from happening. The most important consideration is the height at which the motion sensor is installed, which should be about 2.7 feet to 4 feet from the ground.

Outdoor motion sensors are designed to look directly outward, while indoor motion sensors look downward at an angle. By installing an outdoor motion sensor approximately 3.3 feet off the ground, the motion sensor will achieve a detection radius of about 40 feet outward. At this height, the motion detector will be less likely to be set off by very small animals, but it will still be able to properly detect humans. While larger animals can also activate the sensor, many of them will simply move right over the sensor's detection area.

The dip switches for an outdoor motion detector can be adjusted to determine its sensitivity. A lower sensitivity setting will make it more difficult for the sensor to activate. An increased sensitivity setting will have the sensor respond more easily. Animals are more likely to set off an outdoor motion detector if the device is set to a high sensitivity setting. If animals are continuously setting off your outdoor motion, you may want to decrease the sensitivity for the device.

He then explains that the heat from sunlight can also sometimes trigger and outdoor motion detector. For that reason, an outdoor motion detector should not be placed in an area where it will receive direct sunlight for an extended period of time. For best results, outdoor motions should be tested to make sure that they will not be easily set off by environmental factors in their installed area.
