The Clever Hansel Effect: Fools at 11

The "Clever Hansel Effect" is a term I coined to describe the phenomenon
where parents and clinicians intentionally or inadvertently, via classical and operate conditioning, teach a young person to identify as the sex that they are not, and to have strong "gender" preferences. It derives from the effect in animal cognition research known as the "Clever Hans Effect." Clever Hans was a horse that was claimed to be able to add and subtract. Clever Hans indicated the sum or difference by stomping his hoof until he reached the correct number. It was later revealed that the horse had learned to attend to the human handler, who did have the capacity to add, subtract, and count, and would stop counting when, consciously or subconsciously, his human trainer signaled that he had reached the correct number of hoofbeats. Contemporary animal cognition researchers take great care to eliminate the Clever Hans Effect via methods that reduce the animals' opportunities to study the reactions of the scientists and make inferences from that data, which corrupts the quality of the data generated by the research.
