Your Neighborhood with Kimo Quance (Episode 14: La Mesa)
La Mesa nicknamed, “the jewel of the hills,” resides in central San Diego. The area we know as La Mesa today was originally founded by the spanish and was included in the Mission San Diego de Alcala back in the late 18th century. However, the introduction of the railroad into San Diego set off land cultivation in the east. After several purchases of the almost 4,000 acres, the owner of “Lookout Ranch” took the land and started to develop streets and farms which he named La Mesa Colony on the maps. After thriving for some time in the late 1800’s with it’s successful citrus cultivation of the La Mesa Lemon Company Store, it officially became known as the city of La Mesa in 1869.
Located between El Cajon in the east and the city of San Diego in the west, the city of La Mesa is only ten miles from some of the best beaches on the west coast. The city is embedded within the geographical rolling hills, and tablelands, hence the name that can be translated to “the table.”
Although today the city isn’t doing much citrus farming anymore, the city of La Mesa is home to a town of small businesses, community run events, and so much more!
Downtown La Mesa is one of the most happening places in east San Diego. The city is full of family owned business, breweries, restaurants and the home to so much more.
The city is also home to some great events for the community to come together and enjoy each other's company. This includes:
The farmer’s market in La Mesa Village.
Oktoberfest in the fall.
Various car shows where locals and travelers share some of the prize possessions.
Sunday’s at Six, a local concert series that performs during the months of June and July.
Previously covered, the Grossmont Center for any shopping needs, eats, movies, or to kill some time.
La Mesa Blvd.
One of the best ways to fully encompass downtown La Mesa, is to park and wander down La Mesa Boulevard. This strip is full of things to see and do. Some main stays include:
Centifonti’s Bar and Restaurant
Johnny B’s
And new places to try like:
Surf Rider Pizza
Public Square Coffee House
Or City Tacos
Breweries
La Mesa does have quite the variety of businesses, and one that continues to boom are the small craft beer breweries located in the city. These include:
The city of La Mesa really has it all, and this includes some great education too. La Mesa is home to both Helix and Grossmont High School, separated by only 4 miles. Both schools are part of the Grossmont Union High School District, also headquartered in La Mesa.
Helix High is one of three charter schools in the district. The Scotties traditionally are a powerhouse in both boy’s and girl’s varsity competition. Some famous alumni include duo retired NFL players Reggie Bush and Alex Smith. Did you also know that Hall of Fame NBA coach and player Bill Walton attended Helix High, Class of ‘70.
Helix continues to produce some excellent alumni that also include american true crime writer and investigative journalist Cathy Scott, Lalo Alcaraz most famous for creating the first nationally syndicated, politically themed Latino daily comic strip La Cucaracha.
On the flip side of the, “Battle for the Musket,” are the Grossmont Foothillers or G-HOUSE.
Grossmont High School is actually the oldest in east San Diego. The campus has been beautifully revamped, and is almost completely brand new for all to enjoy. The most recent renovation includes a mural of former Foothiller, and first San Diego Padre to throw a no-hitter, and SD local Joe Musgrove. Former highschool teammate Steven Brault also currently pitches in The Show, and is a part of Jomboy Media’s podcast “The Chris Rose Rotation,” for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Grossmont also has some bragging rights when in conversation about the solar system. They actually have a string of alumni that have become astronauts, these names include:
William Anders
Ellen Ochoa
Frederick W. Sturckow
