Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
The green turtle is the most common type of turtle found and lives in tropical seas. It can be recognized by its small head and blunt beak. The green turtle is named not because its scales are green, but the color of the fat under the scales is green. The body can be gray, blackish or brownish. This type of turtle meat is the most consumed throughout the world, especially in Bali. Maybe because people hunt for their meat, this turtle is sometimes also called a meat turtle.

Adult green turtles live in grasslands and algae. Green turtles can weigh up to 400 kg, but in Southeast Asia it is about half this size that grows the largest. Green turtles in the southwest of the Hawaiian Islands are sometimes found landing during the day for hot sunbathing. Green turtle hatchlings around the Gulf of California eat only red algae.
Green turtles will return to the beach where they were born to lay eggs every 3 to 4 years. When green turtles are young they eat various types of marine life such as sea worms, mussel shrimp, seaweed and algae. When their bodies reach a size of about 20-30 cm, they turn into herbivores and their main diet is seaweed.
