fundamentals of business negotiation

Negotiating isn't cryptic. It isn't mysterious. It isn't a dark art. It's, do you have what I want? And do I have what you want? Then let's work together and both get what we want.

It's a two-way street. It's mutually beneficial. You get what you want and I get what I want. After years and years of bad relationships and getting the short end of the stick, I refuse to deal with anyone who isn't gunning for a win-win as hard as I am.

See, it can only go down in one of four different ways. Either...You win and I lose...Or, you lose and I win...Or, we both win...Or, we both lose. Those are the only possible outcomes.

And speaking from personal experience, I've been on the end of way, way too many relationships that were of the "You win I lose" variety.

In fact, I've been in some relationships that were so bad, so toxic that, even though I thought we were both gunning for a "we both win" scenario, what was actually happening was that while I was gunning for "win-win," they had ulterior motives and were actually going for "I lose they win."

And the relationships were SO toxic that if they couldn't get me in a losing position, then their next best choice was "we both lose." Insanity. What sane person would think this is a positive, winning strategy?

In other words, it's "my way or the highway." Fine, if that's the way it is, then show me the next off-ramp because I don't have the time, the interest or the room in my life for that kind of garbage.

This is why getting rid of toxic people is critical, no matter how close to you they are. They'll constantly have you in a losing position. So how do you win negotiations in business and life? Only gun for a single scenario: "Win-win."

If they aren't interested in that sort of scenario, or you catch even a whiff of ulterior motives, shut it down and walk away. Life's too short to get yourself entwined in deals where you're getting the short end of the stick.

And the great benefit to this approach? You start gaining a reputation as being a solid person who does great work, who upholds their end of the deal. And guess what? More deals start flowing your way.
