When President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump traveled to Tokyo in May 2019, it was the first state visit by a sitting US president to Japan since 1996. For their first day in Japan, Mrs. Trump spent most of her time with Mrs. Akie Abe, the wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
For the occasion, Melania Trump wore a floral embroidered A line dress with a fitted bodice by Carolina Herrara. She matched the dress with a pair of rich red suede stiletto heels by Manolo Blahnik. The pop of red against the mostly white dress is reminescent of the Japanese flag. Similarly, the cherry blossom print dress recalls Japan's world-renowned cherry blossom trees.
That evening, Melania Trump stepped up the glamour several notches when she arrived at the Imperial Palace of Japan to greet Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako. For the historic event, the first lady donned a light pink J. Mendel silk chiffon gown that features a caftan style cape, a slit up the side, bejeweled neckline, and impeccably embroidered feathers. The silvery neckline and feathers are complimented by the silver iridescent Christian Louboutin stilettos with which Mrs. Trump paired the dress. The long flowing cape that accompanies the gown is suggestive of a Japanese kimono. With both ensembles, her day dress and her evening gown, the first lady struck the perfect notes of elegance and style, while paying homage to the rich local Japanese culture.
