Rescue of Kariong Cockatoo
Rescue of Kariong Cockatoo
Kariong on the NSW Central Coast with a juvenile sulphur-crested cockatoo pinned 25 metres up a tree by fishing line caught on its leg. It's parents kept it alive while it dangled helplessly in the heat and wind for more than a day. The height and difficulty of access foiled attempts by Fire & Rescue NSW to find a way to the bird.
Rescue came from two local businesses, Waters Crane Services and Agtree Services, at the request of animal rescue group WIRES. Waters Cranes kindly offered up a 55 tonne crane to retrieve the exhausted bird, and Agtree proved invaluable with their assistance and bird-wrangling skills. The cockatoo was whisked away by a WIRES specialist volunteer to Somersby Animal Hospital to be treated prior to rehabilitation and release.
