Does Passive Income Actually Exist?

If you are interested in business, finance, marketing or anything professional related, chances are you get hit with ads talking about how to make passive income online or other make money online opportunities.
Is there any validity to this? From my experience, the only real way to achieve somewhat passive income is to build a successful enough business so that the systems (and employees operating them) can function without you.
Keep in mind, if you are not directly involved in the business, chances are it will not be as successful. There is a lot that a CEO/leader brings to the table such as culture, motivation and making sure the team meets their KPI's.
