At CES in January 2020, Hyperkin announced a new console, dedicated to bringing your handheld games to your modern, flat panel TV. It was called the RetroN Jr, and the goal was to deliver a 720P HD image via HDMI cable. The idea behind the RetroN JR is that it will allow you to conveniently play your Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advanced cartridges on your TV. The RetroN Junior features a 720p HDMI output, making it very easy to connect it to your modern flat-panel television. In addition to HDMI, the RetroN JR also has AV outputs too! That means you can play an older CRT tube televisions as well. There will also be a 4:3 & 16:9 aspect ratio switch and an integrated stereo headphone jack. Pretty neat.
Fast-forward to December 2020 and Hyperkin has sent us a press release with some more information. Firstly, the name of the console has been updated. It is now named the RetroN SQ, for Square. Secondly, the original prototype showed composite AV cables, along with the HDMI port. In the latest renders those have been removed. Thirdly, an SD card slot is not included for firmware updates. Finally, a secondary color has been announced, along the same lines of the recently announced RetroN5 Beach Edition.
While we don't have any official pricing information at this time, the price is rumored to be between $70 & $100, with one wired USB Scout Controller included. We also do not have a firm release date at this time, however with this sort of press release now out there it is safe to bet we'll see it in the first half of 2021. Finally, it is interesting that the GBA compatibility is considered to be a beta feature out of the gate. It will be interesting to see how playable GBA games will be when this is finally released.
