A new study has revealed disturbing information about how the novel coronavirus COVID-19 can affect the heart.
According to UPI, 78% of 100 people diagnosed with COVID-19 showed evidence of heart damage caused by the disease, weeks after they recovered.
Prior to the study, none of the patients had experienced heart problems before contracting COVID-19 and were mostly healthy.
However, after recovering from the virus, 78 of them showed evidence of heart damage, revealed by magnetic resonance imaging.
The researchers said the MRI findings were consistent with two potentially serious heart conditions: myocarditis and pericarditis.
Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle. As it can reduce the heart's ability to pump, it can potentially cause irregular heartbeats.
Pericarditis inflames the protective tissues surrounding the heart and can cause pain.
