A Teacher's Passion For The Constitution Changes Her Students' Lives
For the past 7 years, Trumbull High School's We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution Program, under the leadership of Social Studies Teacher Katie Boland, has won the We The People state championship title.
With more than 28 million students and 75,000 educators who have participated in the Program since its inception in 1987, that's a tremendous feat. This past year the team also came home from the National Competition with the UNIT 3 AWARD or the award for the best non-finalist team for expertise in each unit of competition (How Changes in the Constitution Have Furthered the Ideas in the Declaration of Independence).
How does Katie Boland motivate her 29 students to learn about our country's constitution and freedom? Many say it's Ms. Boland's passion for the topic. She has a love for George Washington, the constitution, and all things government and her students play off of her. She has the ability to take her passion and share it with her students, which makes for success in the classroom, competitions, and in life.
"i think they love this class because it's real world discussions, it's debates, it's discussions," Ms Boland explains. "I get them excited about 1787 today, and also it becomes a family. They know that I care about them and they know that I am there for them."
Every year Civics First and the Center for Civic Education put on state and national level competitions, where thousands of students compete by presenting and answering constitutional based questions. This year the nationals were being held in the National Conference Center in Washington DC from April 21st to April 24th. Last year the team ranked 8th in the nation and this year they won the UNIT 3 AWARD. Good job team and good luck this upcoming year!
