Researchers may have identified a medication that can reduce lung damage in people suffering from COVID-19.
The antiviral drug EIDD-2801 has been effective in mice at preventing severe pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus.
According to a new study, pneumonia is the likely culprit of severe disease and death in those infected.
Health experts say that now the drug has finished animal testing, it will begin human clinical trials later this spring.
The authors of the study have said that the new drug has a high potential for treating COVID-19 patients.
Globally, there are over 1.3 million cases of COVID-19, with a death toll of over 74,000 people.
