Nearly 10 million Americans have been stricken with the flu virus so far this winter.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control noted that the bug has resulted in nearly 87,000 hospitalizations and 4,800 deaths.
In all, 5.8% of all deaths nationwide during the week ending January 4 were caused by pneumonia and flu.
The CDC estimates that 9.7 million people have had the flu since the 2019-20 season began in earnest.
Overall, the CDC reports, flu activity in the U.S. remains elevated, but still below the threshold for a pandemic.
During the week ending January 4, 33 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico reported "high" flu activity.
According to UPI, 34 states reported high influenza activity last week.
