U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York is firing back at the Trump administration who announced changes to the national food stamps program.
According to Business Insider, the new changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will cause about 700,000 people to lose access to food assistance.
This is due to new work requirements for able-bodied adults enrolled in SNAP.
USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue said, "We need to encourage people by giving them a helping hand but not allowing it to become an indefinitely giving hand."
But Ocasio-Cortez explained on Twitter that her own family relied on food stamps after her father died.
She explained, "I was a student...If this happened then, we might've just starved."
She added, "It's shameful how the GOP works overtime to create freebies for the rich while dissolving lifelines of those who need it most."
