Birth control has been used as an option for treating hormonal acne for many years. According to Business Insider, acne, especially for teens, is caused by an imbalance of androgens. Androgens then cause excess sebum, which clogs your pores and leads to acne breakouts. Hormonal birth control regulates hormones in a way that reduces androgen production. The FDA has only approved three types of birth control for treating acne: Yaz, Estrostep and Orth-Tri-Cyclen.
