Beginning in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific, before spreading to Asia and Europe, schoolchildren and students in more than a 100 countries joined, on March 15, a protest demanding action on climate change. A planned event for Christchurch, in New Zealand, was cut short by the mosque shootings in the city, in which at least 49 people died. The “school strike” movement for climate change action has spread around the world since August of 2018, when Greta Thunberg, a Swedish 16-year-old, skipped school and began protesting outside the Swedish parliament.
