War Crimes or Not & A Time for Choosing

A number of lawmakers, sadly, some Republicans among them, raised alarms this past weekend that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth may have committed a war crime based on (what I believe to be) an intentionally erroneous report by the Washington Post that he ordered a follow-up attack to kill survivors of a boat strike in September. A report, I would add, that the New York Times has clarified in a way that makes it clear that War Secretary Hegseth did not commit said war crime while they tried to shift blame to Admiral Frank "Mitch" Bradley. Who, spoiler alert, did not commit a war crime either. And I don't say that based on the Trump administration's account of events, which would be enough to clear the Secretary and the Admiral; I say it based on U.S. law and the official designation of certain types of enemy combatants. A law and a change of designations that the Democrats are very familiar with, since they used it to defend Barack Obama when he was conducting drone strikes against U.S. citizens living in foreign countries. That is a big part of the reason you keep hearing them refer to International law (which isn't damning either, but there is some grey area) instead of U.S. law.

ICE is now targeting illegal Somalis in Minneapolis, Minnesota, who have already had their day in court. Deportation orders from immigration judges are already in place. Their directive does make clear that any other illegal alien migrant discovered during this operation is also fair game for detention. Jacob Frey, recently re-elected Mayor of Minneapolis, is out in public, actively encouraging obstruction of justice in response to efforts to carry out legitimate law enforcement operations. Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH) introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025. The bill would end the practice of U.S. citizens holding dual citizenship. If passed, it would prohibit any American citizen from maintaining citizenship in another nation. Moreno cited concerns about divided loyalties and national allegiance in introducing the bill.
