AI REPLACE 40% AMERICAN JOBS

Artificial intelligence is already displacing workers across major sectors, with real-world consequences unfolding now rather than in some distant future. A recent MIT study estimates AI could directly replace 11.7% of the U.S. labor market—equivalent to $1.2 trillion in wages—particularly affecting finance, healthcare, and professional services. Major corporations like Amazon, Salesforce, Walmart, and YouTube are aggressively automating roles, with Amazon alone planning to replace 600,000 warehouse jobs with robots and automate 75% of its operations. Goldman Sachs projects 6–7% of U.S. workers could be displaced, while McKinsey forecasts up to 40% of American jobs may be automated by 2030. Experts like Ford’s CEO and NYU professor Scott Galloway warn that white-collar and middle-management roles are especially vulnerable, with early signs already visible in declining managerial headcounts since 2022.

In response to this looming crisis, Universal Basic Income (UBI) is reemerging as a serious policy proposal. Cook County, Illinois, has made its $500-per-month pilot program permanent after 94% of recipients used the funds for emergencies and reported improved financial and mental well-being. Former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, who championed a $1,000 “Freedom Dividend” in 2020, argues that UBI is essential to maintain consumer participation in a capitalist economy increasingly hollowed out by AI-driven job loss. He proposes funding it through taxes on AI companies—many of which profit from data generated by the public without compensation. While critics worry about work disincentives and fiscal sustainability, Yang contends UBI would empower people to contribute meaningfully to their communities, even as millions of traditional jobs vanish. Though he rejects extreme forecasts like 99% unemployment, he warns that 30–40 million displaced workers over the next decade would be catastrophic—making proactive solutions like UBI not just sensible, but urgent.
