The project owners were probably paying for prevailing wages, or close to it, while their contractor was paying half that amount to illegal workers under the table. I thought I remembered a movie a long time ago called A Day Without Immigrants, but when I looked it up, I saw that there was a protest on February 3, 2025, called A Day Without Immigrants. It obviously didn't affect many people, because this is the first I've heard of it. I could go for a good taco right about now, but I'd prefer it to be from a restaurant that hires Mexican Americans. I never realized Charlotte was such a hotbed of illegal immigration. ICE apparently knew.
