Millionaire steals hat from kid at US Open
At the 2025 US Open on August 29, a seemingly celebratory moment turned into a viral controversy that captured global attention and sparked fierce debate about privilege and accountability. Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak had just secured an impressive victory over ninth-seed Karen Khachanov and was engaging with fans by signing autographs. When he removed his hat to give to a young boy named Brock, Polish millionaire Piotr Szczerek, CEO of paving company Drogbruk, swooped in and snatched the hat, casually placing it in his wife's bag as cameras rolled. The child's disappointment was visible, but Majchrzak, turning away at the critical moment, remained unaware of what had just transpired.
The video spread like wildfire across social media platforms, with one post on X alone garnering over 10 million views. Internet users quickly identified Szczerek, and the backlash was immediate and severe. His company was bombarded with hundreds of one-star reviews on platforms like Trustpilot, all linked to the incident. Facing mounting pressure, Szczerek initially deactivated his social media accounts and reportedly made defensive comments, including "If you were faster, you would have it" and threats of legal action. However, as the controversy intensified, he eventually issued a more contrite apology on Facebook and Instagram, claiming he had mistakenly believed the hat was intended for his sons, who had previously asked for autographs. He acknowledged his "extremely poor judgment" and admitted his actions "caused hurt to the young boy and disappointed the fans."
The story concluded with a redemptive twist that restored faith in human kindness. Majchrzak, upon learning of the incident through social media, launched a search for the young fan and successfully tracked him down. He personally met with Brock and presented him with a new signed Asics cap along with a bag full of tennis memorabilia, creating a joyful moment that went as viral as the original controversy. Szczerek also returned the original hat to the boy's family with a direct apology. The incident has become a powerful case study in how the digital age has transformed accountability, demonstrating that no amount of wealth or status can shield someone from the consequences of poor behavior when millions are watching. For Majchrzak, despite having to later withdraw from the tournament due to injury, his compassionate response won him widespread admiration and proved that genuine character always shines through.
