In 1976, 1977 and 1978 - between the Fall of Saigon in 1975 and the intervention in Afghanistan in 1979; the Soviet Union was ahead in the cold war race against the collective West.

In 1977 the Soviet Union was at the height of its power, even more so than in 1946-1953.
