San Pedro, CA - A robbery and vandalism suspect died in custody after resisting his arrest in the Harbor region of Los Angeles, police announced Thursday.

It was early Tuesday morning, according to the L.A. Police Department, when officers received a radio call reporting a robbery in progress at a convenience store in San Pedro.

Around 2:30 a.m., Harbor Patrol Division officers arrived at the store located in the 700 block of West Channel Street to find the suspect vandalizing the business. The LAPD has since identified the suspect as 34-year-old Roger John Nielsen.

Officers purportedly first tried speaking with Nielsen, who LAPD said then armed himself with a piece of plexiglass from a sign he had damaged.

“The officers deployed a 40mm Less-Lethal Launcher, striking Nielson in the upper torso area,” stated the department. “After additional attempts to gain compliance were unsuccessful, officers approached Nielsen, who quickly placed himself on the ground, face down. Nielsen was taken into custody after a brief Non-Categorical Use of Force (NCUOF).”

Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department soon arrived and transported Nielsen to a local hospital, where the LAPD said he was later pronounced dead. No further details on the cause of his death were immediately provided.

The LAPD noted that, also during the use of force, an officer suffered a dislocated finger and was treated and released — but no other community members were injured during the incident.
