How China Captured Tibet | A Brief History of Tibet
China's annexation of Tibet began in 1950 when the People's Liberation Army entered the region, citing historical claims and asserting control. In 1951, the Seventeen Point Agreement was signed, ostensibly granting Tibet a degree of autonomy within the Chinese state. However, the agreement was widely criticized for being coercive and lacking genuine Tibetan representation. Tensions escalated, leading to the 1959 Tibetan Uprising, during which the Dalai Lama fled to India.
Subsequently, China solidified its control over Tibet, suppressing dissent and implementing policies that marginalized Tibetan culture and religion. The international community, while acknowledging Chinese sovereignty, has often criticized China's human rights abuses in Tibet.
