Families and survivors gathered at ground zero in New York City to mark the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. For many, the grief still feels fresh.
“It feels the same way every year,” said Jennifer Nilsen, who wore a shirt honoring her late husband, Troy. Michelle Pizzo, remembering her husband Jason DeFazio, urged younger generations to pause and reflect. “Younger kids don’t realize that you have to remember,” she said.
Some attendees were too young to have lived through the attacks but came to honor the day’s significance. Emma Williamson, 20, said, “I wasn’t born when it happened, but it was the last time America truly came together.”
This year’s ceremony unfolded amid heightened political tension, following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah the day before. Vice President JD Vance and his wife skipped the New York memorial to meet with Kirk’s family in Salt Lake City, as his body was flown home to Arizona aboard Air Force Two. FBI Director Kash Patel was among those present at ground zero, where security was increased.
The remembrance included a moment of silence at the exact time the first plane hit the World Trade Center. Family members read victims’ names aloud, often sharing personal updates.
Zoe Doyle, whose father Frank died in the towers, spoke about her family’s nonprofit, which builds schools and feeds children in South Africa. Manuel DaMota Jr. said he honors his father’s memory by choosing “connection, empathy, and hope” in a divided world.
For some, this year brought new layers of sorrow. Melissa Pullis, whose husband Edward was killed, said it was especially painful as two of their children are marrying. Fighting tears, she added, “You can’t walk your princess down the aisle. You are missed every day.”
