What Does the Quran Say About the Reality of Worldly Life

Assalamu Alaikum sisters, brothers, friends and elders:
We welcome you to Statement Number 59 in our series of statements. We will explain in it that: (What Does the Quran Say About the Reality of Worldly Life), our aim is to learn and teach from the Quran and Sunnah, reflect on history and seek solutions to problems with divine guidance.

The Quran constantly reminds mankind about the reality of worldly life, presenting it as a temporary stage, full of trials and distractions, while emphasizing that the true and everlasting life is in the hereafter. Allah has revealed clear verses to guide humanity so that people do not become deceived by the glitter of this world and neglect their eternal destiny. The Quran provides deep wisdom on the nature of dunya, its fleeting pleasures, and the importance of preparing for the life to come.

One of the most profound descriptions is found in Surah Al-Hadid verse 20, where Allah says, Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children. It is like the example of rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers, then it dries and you see it turned yellow, then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion. This verse beautifully captures the temporary nature of worldly attractions. Wealth, status, and pleasures are like plants after rainfall—green for a short while but eventually fading away.

The Quran warns that being deceived by the dunya leads to ultimate loss. In Surah Al-Imran verse 185, Allah says, Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained success. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion. This verse makes it clear that true success is not measured by worldly gains but by salvation in the hereafter. The world is a test, and its comforts are temporary illusions that vanish at death.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, also explained the reality of this world. In Sahih Muslim Hadith number 2956, he said, The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the disbeliever. This Hadith emphasizes that for believers, worldly life is full of restrictions as they discipline themselves with the commands of Allah, while disbelievers indulge freely. However, for the believer, the eternal reward in Paradise outweighs any hardship of this life, while for the disbeliever, worldly enjoyment will end with eternal loss.

The Quran also teaches that worldly possessions are a test. In Surah Al-Anfal verse 28, Allah says, And know that your wealth and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward. Thus, wealth and family are blessings, but they can distract a person from the remembrance of Allah if not managed with responsibility. The Quran constantly reminds believers not to let love for material things overpower their duty to Allah.

At the same time, the Quran does not prohibit enjoying the lawful comforts of life. In Surah Al-Araf verse 32, Allah says, Say, Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has produced for His servants and the good [lawful] things of provision? Say, They are for those who believe during the worldly life, but exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection. This verse shows that Islam allows enjoyment of lawful pleasures, but warns against excessiveness, pride, and forgetfulness of the hereafter. The balance is to enjoy the blessings of Allah while remaining conscious of accountability.

Another key aspect the Quran teaches is that worldly life is meant to test human beings. In Surah Al-Mulk verse 2, Allah says, He who created death and life to test you as to which of you is best in deed, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving. The dunya is not created as an end goal but as an arena of examination. Success in this test requires faith, righteous action, and patience. The distractions of wealth, power, and desires are part of this trial, and those who remain steadfast will attain eternal happiness.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, reminded his followers about the insignificance of dunya compared to the hereafter. In Jami At-Tirmidhi Hadith number 2320, he said, If the world were worth the wing of a mosquito in the sight of Allah, He would not have given a disbeliever even a sip of water from it. This Hadith shows that the dunya has little value in the sight of Allah, and what matters most is the eternal life that follows.

The Quran also contrasts the temporary nature of this world with the permanence of the hereafter. In Surah Al-Ala verses 16 and 17, Allah says, But you prefer the worldly life, while the Hereafter is better and more enduring. This reminder urges believers to prioritize eternal success over short-lived enjoyment. While people may chase wealth, fame, or status, all of it eventually fades, while deeds for the hereafter remain everlasting.

Despite the constant reminders, the Quran acknowledges that human beings are often heedless. In Surah Yunus verse 7, Allah says, Indeed, those who do not expect the meeting with Us and are satisfied with the worldly life and feel secure therein and those who are heedless of Our signs. Such people are warned of severe consequences for choosing the dunya over the akhirah.

In conclusion, the Quran paints a clear picture of worldly life as fleeting, deceptive, and secondary to the eternal life of the hereafter. It is a place of trial, not a permanent home. The Prophet, peace be upon him, and the Quran both stress that the dunya should be used wisely to earn rewards for the next life, rather than being wasted in heedlessness and pride. The real measure of success is not how much wealth, power, or fame one attains, but how much one prepares for standing before Allah on the Day of Judgment. The believer must live in this world but keep the hereafter as the ultimate goal. In doing so, one finds true meaning and ultimate success.

We conclude today's discussion with this humble supplication: O Allah, purify our hearts, accept our deeds, forgive our sins, and include us among Your grateful servants. Amen
