The boy sat on a platform, so many miles away,
to celebrate the debris and watch it all decay.

The station’s shattered windows, its dilapidated stair,
all crumbled into wreckage, quite beyond repair.

He hated every signal box; he hated every rail.
He savoured every year a mainline showed itself to fail.

The boy observed the gradual collapse of every stone,
a sense of triumph he enjoyed but only when alone.

A single girder bridge, slowly rusting over time,
its eventual collapse a prospect he found quite sublime

for it was a diesel engine, its brakes a squall of squeals,
that one day crushed his parents underneath its wheels.
