Why are tomatoes being genetically altered for vitamin D? | BBC News

They look and taste like any other tomato, but these tomatoes in Norfolk have been genetically altered to contain more vitamin D.
Tomatoes traditionally lack being a good source for vitamin D, but these gene-edited contain an adult's daily allowance in just four.
But why is this being done? Well, Professor Martin Warren from the Quadram Institute says during the summer, humans have enough sun to create their own vitamin D, but in the winter months, food sources for the vitamin are vital.
