The Bacchae by Euripides: Dionysus - The God of Theatre

The Bacchae by Euripides is a Greek tragedy that explores the conflict between human authority and divine power. The play centers on Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility, and ecstatic worship, who returns to Thebes to assert his divinity and punish those who deny him, particularly King Pentheus. Pentheus, rigid and authoritarian, attempts to suppress Dionysus and the bacchic rituals, but his curiosity and pride lead him to his tragic downfall. The drama examines themes of madness, religious ecstasy, the dangers of excessive pride, and the blurred boundaries between civilization and primal instincts. It is both a family tragedy, focusing on Pentheus and his mother Agaue, and a meditation on the power and mystery of the divine.
