Willem Kieft Tells of How His Choices Were Disasterous to the People of New Netherlands

My name is Willem Kieft, and I was born in the Netherlands in 1597. In 1638, I was sent to New Netherland as its Director by the Dutch West India Company. The colony was small and scattered, and I believed it needed strong leadership. I tried to bring order, expand settlements, and show the native peoples that the Dutch were in control. But I made decisions that caused deep trouble. I demanded tribute from the local Algonquin tribes, thinking it would secure our authority, but instead it fueled anger and led to a bloody conflict now called Kieft’s War. Farms were destroyed, lives were lost, and trust between colonists and native peoples was broken. Many settlers blamed me for the devastation, and they were right to say my policies were harsh and reckless. Eventually, I was recalled to answer for my failures. I never made it back to explain myself—I died in a shipwreck in 1647. If you remember me, let it be as a warning: leadership without wisdom or compassion can cost far more than it gains.
