Zambia is seeking greater compensation from a Chinese-owned copper mine after a toxic waste spill polluted the Kafue River, a vital source of drinking water. In February, a dam collapsed at Sino-Metals Leach Zambia, releasing highly acidic waste laced with heavy metals, causing fish kills, crop damage, and health problems for nearby communities. The firm apologised and offered $580,000, but Vice-President Mutale Nalumango said that may not be enough, stressing citizens’ safety is “non-negotiable.” Environmental experts warn of long-term risks, including cancer, organ damage, and birth defects, while foreign embassies have issued health alerts and travel advisories.
