The World at War - Part VIII - Operation Overlord (Myth20c - Ep302)

In the minds of many Americans - arguably owing to the canonization of D-Day by Hollywood movies - the battle to take Europe from the Germans began in earnest on June 6th, 1944, when American, British, and Canadian troops successfully established a beachhead on French soil for the first time after the Reich's takeover of France in 1940. But to the Germans, and almost certainly to the Soviets, who had been fighting ferociously in the East for 3 years to the tune of over 10-15 million dead, the Normandy landings were a footnote in much greater civilization struggle. Nonetheless, the sheer technical and logistical feat of the western invasion, which comprised the largest flotilla ever assembled at over 5,000 ships, and the meticulous planning and over 1 million various soldiers and support personnel it took demonstrated to the Germans the writing was on the wall in terms of the sheer firepower they were about to face on not just one major front but two - and how attempts at suing the Western allies for peace were looking less and less likely to succeed.
