This is not just a hearing aid.
Although it is a high quality and very effective aid for those with mild to middling hearing impairment, it also has all the features of a high end Bluetooth headset and plenty more besides.
In the rather posh box I received left and right hearing aids, a charging case, a USB-C charging cable, a cleaning tool, 13 mixed hearing domes (similar to the ear gels supplied with Bluetooth headsets), a set of wax guards (for use with the domes), a quick start guide, and a user guide. As a bonus, in the shipping box was an attractive and well made Elehear branded tote bag. Build quality throughout was first rate and all with a distinct premium feel to it.
The charging case is similar to those used with most Bluetooth earbuds but is larger in size, heavier and better made. On one side is a USB-C power in port, and on the other a recessed reset button. On the front is an case battery LED status display. Although well made, the buds are designed to be very lightweight, and I suspect they are rather fragile, so do not treat them as carelessly as you would a Bluetooth headset. Each bud has a behind the ear control pod with power and volume buttons, two microphones and a tiny combined receiver and speaker which sits in the ear canal secured by a soft, flexible and interchangeable ear dome. The two pieces are connected by a thin wire, which, although reinforced and as robust as possible, is bound to be delicate and in need of care and gentle handling. When in place, the hearing aid set is almost invisible, with the pods concealed behind the ear and hair and the receivers inside the ear.
The earpieces are charged inside the case, with a full charge giving up to twenty hours of use and a fifteen minute quick charge giving around six hours. A fully charged case should give at least four additional earpiece charges.
How well does it work as a hearing aid? Well, I have no medical or technical qualifications, and so am entirely unable to give any advice on that basis. I can say that from my personal experience, speech is clearly boosted greatly and can be enhanced greatly by the newly updated VocClear™ 2.0 technology, with feedback or acoustic disturbances minimised or reduced.
Now let's look at the Elehear app, which is where all the clever stuff lives. After registering an account and logging in, you can fine tune and tailor the hearing aid features to your particular requirements. You can run a detailed audio test and save the results as your own profile to reload automatically or on demand. You can also select a range of preset situations to use with your profile - restaurant, Music, TV, etc. The headset can be tailored to reduce or ameliorate almost any tupe of background noise.
The headset will also work as a high quality music player and functions just as well as any standard Bluetooth headset. It also records audio on demand. It has a range of audio white noise and natural ambient sounds designed to reduce and relieve tinnitus. To be honest, there are simply too many special features to list fully here.
All these features and technology go to make phone calls clearer and easier to follow than ever before for this type of hearing aid.
Perhaps the most interesting feature is that of an 11 language real time translator. The headset mics record your speech and it appears translated to the second language on the screen. The other person then replies in his own language and that appears on your half the screen in your own language as a voice speaks the translation. This is all down in real time and works perfectly. From what I have read this is a world first for a device of this type.
In general use you do not need the app. When first receiving the Beyond Pro you can configure and setup the headset for general use and then leave it aside, using it for special situations or to access specialised features. In normal use it works as a stand alone device perfectly well, with the on-ear power and volume controls.
Now we come to the price. On the Elehear website it is currently priced at $599, which is no little sum, but vastly less than you would pay for a prescription device, which might not even work as well. If you have severe or disgnosed hearing loss then always consult your doctor but before paying out thousands, just give this new headset a try.
