President Trump called no-cash-bail arrangements a "disaster" that encourages crime and promised Monday to push congressional legislation outlawing them nationally. The bill's author, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), promised to repeal New York's bail reform legislation and reinstate "law and order that puts America first."
During a White House press conference, Trump attacked no-cash-bail practices in New York, Chicago, and other Democratic-led cities. He also proclaimed temporary federal authority of the police force in Washington, D.C. He remarked, "Someone kills someone and they're released without posting any money bail before the day is over."
Stefanik called Gov. Kathy Hochul's bail reform a "radical, dangerous, and insane" policy that prioritizes "criminals and illegals" above law-abiding individuals, and she told the New York Post that she would spearhead the legislative effort to repeal it
