My name is Omu. I am what our people call a Knowledge Keeper. Some just call me Grandmother. I’ve seen many seasons, more than I can count. My hair was once black as charcoal, but now it’s the color of ash, and that’s just fine by me. With age comes memory, and memory is what I carry.
I was born during the rainy season, when the trees were green and the berries grew thick near the river. My mother was a gatherer, and my father was a tracker. But from the time I could walk, I followed my mother everywhere—through tall grass, over muddy hills, under the shade of thorny trees—watching what she picked and what she left alone. I didn’t speak much as a child. I listened. I watched. That’s how I learned which plants healed the sick, which ones poisoned the careless, and which roots fed a hungry belly through a long winter.
People think gathering is easy. But knowing the land, really knowing it, takes time and respect. A plant doesn’t just give you food. You have to understand when it’s ready, how much to take, and how much to leave so it grows back. You have to watch the birds, the insects, the color of the leaves. I learned the smell of rain before it fell. I learned how to find water just by watching the way plants bend. These things weren’t taught in a loud voice—they were passed down in small whispers, in quiet glances, in the shape of a leaf pressed into my hand.
When I became a mother, I passed that knowledge on. Not just to my children, but to all the young ones who walked near me. I taught them to hum while gathering so they didn’t pick too fast. I showed them how to dig with a smooth stick so the roots didn’t break. I told them stories—some true, some shaped like truth—to help them remember. Like the tale of the boy who picked nightshade berries because they looked sweet. He fell asleep for three days. That story has saved more lives than any medicine I’ve made.
As I got older, I gathered less and taught more. That’s what we do—we shift our roles as we grow. I don’t run anymore. My knees ache in the cold. But I still walk every day. I still know which branch will snap, and which one will bend. I still grind seeds with my hands and sing to the fire as it warms my back.
In our world, every person matters. Not because of their strength, but because of what they bring to the circle. The hunter feeds the clan, yes. But the one who knows which plants to boil for a fever, or how to treat a wound, or how to keep a baby from crying through the night—that person saves the clan again and again.
