Some number of you have doubtless either read The Hunger Games series or seen the movies. Of late I’ve read the somewhat recent prequels that author Suzanne Collins wrote, and went right from those to rereading the dystopian Hunger Games trilogy itself. For those of you familiar with the main series, the first prequel titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes follows the early life of Coriolanus Snow who became president of Panem, which dictated the ongoing requirement of the Hunger Games to remind the rebel districts of their grievous sin of uprising against the all-powerful Capitol (yes – Collins spells it Capitol instead of Capital). The next prequel is Sunrise on the Reaping which provides an in-depth look at the early life of Haymitch Abernathy, who won his Hunger Games trial and then was forced for years afterward to mentor subsequent tributes from his home area of District 12 – ultimately mentoring Katniss Everdeen, the Mockingjay.
