In a story that has horrified the nation, newly released bodycam footage shows the chilling moment Baltimore County officers discovered the decaying bodies of 7-year-old Joshlyn Johnson and 5-year-old Larry O'Neill III in the trunk of their aunt’s car during a 2021 traffic stop.
Nicole Johnson, 36, was sentenced Monday to life in prison, with all but 50 years suspended, for two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death. She broke down in court, cradling her face in her hands as the sentence was read.

The bodycam video — just made public — captures the exact moment officers noticed a putrid smell as they prepared to tow Johnson’s unregistered and uninsured vehicle. What began as a routine stop escalated into a horror scene as Johnson casually pulled out a maggot-infested tote and a garbage bag. Inside: the decomposing remains of the two children she promised to care for.

“This is a nightmare,” one prosecutor told the court. The children had been dead for months — even years — weighing just 18 and 21 pounds, signs of severe neglect and abuse.

In a heartbreaking confession captured in police interviews, Johnson admitted to striking Joshlyn in 2020, causing her to fatally hit her head. Larry, she claimed, died in his sleep a year later. She kept their bodies hidden in her trunk for over a year, never calling for help.

The children’s mother, Dachelle Johnson, entrusted her sister with their care during a mental health crisis. "It was supposed to be family helping family," she wrote. "I'll never get to see my kids because of a mistake I made in trusting my sister."
