🇺🇸 US Strongly Condemns Macron's Plan to Recognize Palestine: "A Reckless Decision That Benefits Hamas"
Washington, Update Nusantara — The United States government has condemned French President Emmanuel Macron's plan to officially recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the move a "reckless decision" that he believes will only worsen the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
Rubio delivered the condemnation in a public statement posted on the X platform on Thursday (July 24th local time). "Unilateral recognition of Palestine will only perpetuate Hamas propaganda and worsen the prospects for peace. This is an insult to the victims of the October 7th attacks," Rubio said, referring to Hamas's attacks on Israel last year.
Macron's plan to bring Palestinian state recognition to the UN General Assembly in September 2025 has garnered support from several European countries, including Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which have already taken similar steps. However, this move has been strongly opposed by Israel and its main ally, the United States.
Israel, through Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has accused France's move of "rewarding terrorism" and warned of the risk of establishing an "Iranian proxy state" in the West Bank.
Despite the criticism, Macron has maintained that recognizing Palestine is part of France's historic commitment to supporting a two-state solution. Several diplomatic sources say France will develop a timeframe and criteria for recognition as part of a new peace initiative.
