Topa Inca Yupanqui tells of his Expansion and Vision of the Incas and their Future

I am Topa Inca Yupanqui, son of the great Sapa Inca Pachacuti. Some knew me as a conqueror, others as a builder, and a few still whisper stories of my journey across the ocean. But I was born first as a son, an heir, and a student of empire.

My father, Pachacuti, was not just a ruler—he was a visionary who turned the small Kingdom of Cusco into the mighty Inca Empire. From the time I could walk, he taught me not only how to lead men, but how to listen to the land, to watch the stars, and to respect the power of the gods. He didn’t wait until he was old to give me responsibility. No—he sent me to the front lines while I was still young, to prove myself in battle, to see how hard empire-building really was. He wanted me to understand that we didn’t just rule with words—we ruled with roads, with rituals, and with resolve.

When I led my first campaigns, I moved north, toward what is now Ecuador. The peoples there—like the Cañari and Chimu—were strong, proud, and skilled in ways we hadn’t seen before. We didn’t just fight them. We studied them. When we defeated them, I made sure to preserve what was valuable—engineers, artists, even some of their leaders—so they could teach us. That’s how the Inca ruled. We absorbed as much as we conquered. We made their gods part of our stories and let their knowledge become part of our strength.

When I became Sapa Inca, I expanded the empire farther than my father had, stretching it from the Maule River in the south all the way to the edges of the northern jungle. But I didn’t stop there. I had always been fascinated by the sea, the vast unknown beyond the western horizon. Some said it was impossible, but I built great balsa rafts and sailed west into the Pacific, taking hundreds of men with me. We were gone for months. When we returned, we brought strange goods—black-skinned people’s ornaments, colorful feathers, and gold unlike any found in our lands. Whether you believe we reached distant islands or not, know this: I dared to go where no Inca had gone before.

But empire is not just about adventure or expansion. It’s about unity, control, and balance. I improved our road system, expanded the use of quipus to record data, and strengthened the mit’a system—the labor tax that kept our roads, terraces, and storehouses running. I built palaces in new cities like Tomebamba and made sure that every region of the empire knew they were part of something bigger than themselves.

I ruled with strength, but I also listened. I trusted my Coya—my queen, Mama Anahuarque—not as a figurehead, but as a strategist, advisor, and leader in her own right. And when my time came to pass my crown, I placed it upon the head of my son, Huayna Capac, who would carry our legacy even further.

I am Topa Inca Yupanqui, not just a warrior or king, but a man who believed that the empire was more than gold and stone. It was a living, breathing thing, built from many voices. And though I am gone, my roads still cross the Andes, and my story still rides the wind.
