The story of the Covenant at Mount Sinai

Brothers, sisters, friends and elders Assalamu Alaikum, wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu, we are presenting the 115th episode of the Islamic informative video based on healing and events from the Holy Quran, and in this video we will describe,The story of the Covenant at Mount Sinai

The story of the Covenant at Mount Sinai is a central episode in the Qur'an that recounts the sacred agreement between Allah and the Children of Israel (Bani Isra'il), delivered through Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). This event was marked by awe-inspiring manifestations of divine power, including the trembling of the mountain, the giving of the Torah, and a solemn promise taken from the people. The Qur'an describes this moment vividly, highlighting both the blessing of receiving divine law and the subsequent disobedience that led to Allah’s displeasure. This story is a lesson in responsibility, reverence for divine commandments, and the importance of fulfilling one's spiritual covenants.

In Surah Al-Baqarah verse 63), Allah says:

"And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel], and raised over you the Mount [saying], 'Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous.'"
This verse refers to the moment when Allah physically raised Mount Sinai above them, commanding them to accept the Torah with seriousness and fear of God. The mountain was suspended over their heads as a sign of divine authority and a warning of the consequences of rejection.

This event is described in more detail in Surah Al-A‘raf verse 171):

“And [mention] when We raised the mountain above them as if it was a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall upon them. [We said], ‘Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it that you might fear Allah.’”
Here, the Qur'an emphasizes the terrifying sight of the mountain lifted above them like a cloud, instilling deep fear and awe. The gesture symbolized the seriousness of the covenant and served as a direct sign from Allah to ensure obedience and submission to the divine law.

However, despite witnessing such miracles, many among the Children of Israel violated their covenant. In **Surah Al-Baqarah verse 83), Allah outlines the contents of the covenant:

“And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them]: Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah. Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.”
This shows that the covenant wasn't merely a ceremonial act—it included core ethical and spiritual obligations. Their later turning away is presented as a betrayal of the trust that Allah had placed upon them.

Another related verse appears in Surah An-Nisa verse 154):

“And We raised over them the Mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, ‘Enter the gate bowing humbly’; and We said to them, ‘Do not transgress on the Sabbath’; and We took from them a solemn covenant.”
This verse links the violation of the Sabbath and disobedience to their earlier covenant, indicating that their breach was not a single act but part of a broader pattern of defiance.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)also referred to the behavior of Bani Isra’il and their covenant. In Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 1871, the Prophet (PBUH) said:

"The people before you were destroyed because they used to punish one who stole among the common people, but if a noble stole, they would leave him. By Allah, if Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad, stole, I would cut off her hand."
This Hadith, though not directly mentioning Mount Sinai, illustrates the importance of upholding divine law without hypocrisy—something the Children of Israel failed to do, as per the covenant at Sinai.

In Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 2652, the Prophet (PBUH)warned against following in the footsteps of previous nations:

"You will follow the ways of those who came before you, span by span, and cubit by cubit..."
This hadith is often interpreted as a warning against repeating the mistakes of Bani Isra’il, including breaking covenants and disobeying divine law after witnessing truth.

The story of the covenant at Mount Sinai is not just a historical account but a living reminder of the seriousness of divine commands. It teaches Muslims to honor their responsibilities to Allah, uphold justice, and maintain reverence for revealed laws. When Allah raises a mountain over a people, metaphorically or literally, it signifies the weight of the trust given to them. And if they violate it, they do so at great spiritual peril.

With this, we ask for your permission until tomorrow and pray to Allah Almighty to grant us the ability to act on the Quran and Hadith, Amen

Allah Hafiz
