Smith Wigglesworth (1859–1947)
Smith Wigglesworth, born June 8, 1859, in Menston, Yorkshire, England, rose from a humble, impoverished background to become a global beacon of faith, often called the “Apostle of Faith.” With little formal education, he worked as a plumber and was illiterate until his wife, Polly, taught him to read the Bible—the only book he ever read. After experiencing baptism in the Holy Spirit in 1907, Wigglesworth’s ministry exploded with boldness, preaching faith, divine healing, and the power of the Holy Spirit. His meetings, spanning the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Europe, were marked by extraordinary miracles: tumors vanished, the lame walked, and reports even claim he raised people from the dead, including his wife Polly.
Wigglesworth’s unyielding belief in God’s Word led him to confront sickness as a spiritual battle, sometimes using bold methods like striking the afflicted area to “hit the devil.” His sermons, compiled in books like Ever Increasing Faith, emphasized childlike faith and spiritual edification through speaking in tongues. As a pioneer of the Pentecostal movement, Wigglesworth helped establish its focus on supernatural signs and wonders, influencing leaders like Aimee Semple McPherson. His legacy endures in Spirit-filled churches, inspiring believers to trust God’s promises for healing and miracles. Wigglesworth’s life shows that God can use anyone with unwavering faith to shake nations for His glory.
