Scifi has a long history of cameos. In the 1979 series, Brigadier Gordon is played by Larry "Buster" Crabbe, the first actor to ever play Buck Rogers! Now remastered to 4K and 60fps, fresh from the Tales From SYL Ranch DARKROOM!

When this episode aired, Crabbe was 35 years older than Gil Gerard (1979's Buck Rogers). He first starred as Buck Rogers 40 years previously. Crabbe passed away four years later, at the age of 75.

In the 1930s, Crabbe also played scifi action hero Flash Gordon. The character's name here is a nod to that.

Gordon, Buck, and Wilma never shared a scene. However, numerous production stills show Crabbe, Gerard, and Erin Gray (1979's Wilma Deering) posing together in costume. Given their context, these could only have been for marketing photos rather than from a deleted scene.

It was a squandered opportunity. Gordon and Buck have at least shared a scene together. Building an entire episode around the character of Brigadier Gordon would have been better. It would have been easy ...

Same general story, except their only pilots haven't even finished flight school. They have to bring old Brigadier Gordon out of retirement to lead a ragtag, fugitive fleet ... er, sorry, wrong Glen A. Larson production ... a ragtag band of rookie pilots on a suicide mission.

One thing Gordon and Buck have in common: they don't use auto-pilot. In-universe, Buck is the only pilot who flies by the seat of his pants, and he kicks ass because of it. Half of the episode is Brigadier Gordon teaching the rookies to stop using auto-pilot.

Naturally, Roddy McDowell and "Buster" Crabbe would need to share a scene. How much more late 1970s could it have gotten?
