06.01.25 Why Some Won't Accept that "Salvation" Equals "Healing"

A quotation from the Workbook caught my attention recently. "My holiness is unlimited in its power to heal because it is unlimited in its power to save." (WkBk.58.4) First of all, this is a wonderful affirmation of total power. I always love those. "Unlimited power" – power without limits, power without boundaries ... it's hard for us who believe we are in the world to perceive anything without limits and boundaries, because this IS a world of limits and boundaries. To choose to experience anything in this world as limitless is to bring an aspect of Reality to it, of Heaven to it

The next thing I see about this teaching is that it is equating healing with being saved. It is telling us that the power to heal and the power to save are the same thing. The inference here is that a sick person, be it ourselves or another, is a person in need of salvation. Many ACIM students have told me that they have trouble with the term "salvation." For them it has fundamentalist Christian overtones to it, and it triggers memories of harsh judgments coming from these Christians. Those who have trouble with the word "salvation" wish ACIM had used a different word. "Salvation is my only function here." (WkBk.99) Well ... ACIM DOES use a different word. It uses "healing." Lesson 99 could just as easily have been worded "Healing is my only function here."

Let's look at another "salvation" lesson. "Salvation of the world depends on me." (WkBk.186) Substituting "healing" for "salvation" again we get, "Healing of the world depends on me." I have told this, and similar things, to those people with the "salvation" problem, and what I have noticed is that it doesn't seem to appease them. It is like they actually WANT ACIM to be "wrong" or "bad" (at least for them), because if it is that gives them a reason to not accept and embrace it fully. "Too religious sounding ..." is a great ego reason. Their judgment against ACIM serves a covert purpose they are not willing to let go of. These people are actively buffering themselves against the teaching and against their healing. That is an entirely different issue. The issue is not that they have a problem with the word "salvation." The issue is truly that they are actively deciding against their own healing.
