19. Deceptive Nature of Jahmīyyah's Arguments | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril

The Shaykh (حفظه الله) concludes this segment with a powerful refutation of the Jahmiyyah — a group whose denial of the Names and Attributes of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala ultimately leads to the negation of His very existence. Quoting Jarīr Ibn ‘Abd Al-Ḥamīd, the Shaykh highlights how the speech of these people begins with seemingly sweet and noble intentions (“أوله عسل” – "its beginning is honey"), but ends in poison, i.e., disbelief and atheism.

Their reasoning? They claimed they were avoiding Tashbīh (likening Allah to His creation) and affirming Tanzīh (declaring Allah’s perfection), but in doing so, they denied Allah’s power, knowledge, mercy, hearing, descending, and more — rendering Him, in their view, without attributes, which implies nonexistence.

The Shaykh underscores the danger of relying on intellect over revelation, as the Jahmiyyah did, and shows how this path — though cloaked in reverence — leads to Ta‘ṭīl (nullification) of the Dhāt (Essence) of Allah. This is why scholars like Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Dhahabi, Imām Ahmad’s son, and Ibn al-Mubārak declared that such beliefs were indistinguishable from atheism.

The Shaykh then transitions to a beautiful analogy: Great things are known by their many names. Swords, cities like Makkah, and Sūrahs like Al-Fātiḥah have many names due to their status. So how can anyone deny the many Names and Attributes of Allah, the Greatest of all? Allah is Akbar – Greater than everything. Denying Him what is affirmed even for lesser things is a great injustice.

The message is clear: Affirming the Names and Attributes of Allah, as revealed in the Qur'an and Sunnah and understood by the Salaf, is part of Tawḥīd. To deny them is to stray far from Islam’s core.
