18: Analysis of Jahmīyyah's Deviation | Shaykh Ahmad Musa Jibril (حفظه الله)

The Shaykh (حفظه الله) explains the deep theological intent behind Imām Al-Bukhāri’s chapter on At-Tawḥīd in his Ṣaḥīḥ, particularly its role in refuting the deviant group known as the Jahmiyyah. These individuals were known for denying the Attributes of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى — a belief that, if taken to its logical conclusion, implies the nullification (Ta‘ṭīl) of Allah’s very existence, wa al-‘iyādh billāh.

The Shaykh emphasizes that while full denial of Allah’s Essence (Dhāt) is rare, negation of His Attributes is widespread among deviant sects. But denying Allah’s Attributes — such as His hearing, seeing, mercy, or knowledge — leads to denying His Names, and ultimately, denying His Existence. This is why the copyists of Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhāri included “Jahmiyyah and others” in the title of Kitāb At-Tawḥīd — recognizing that this chapter is a direct refutation of their ideology.

He references the words of Ibn Taymiyyah rahimahullāh, who explained that negating Attributes logically leads to denying the existence of the One being described. Everything that exists must have distinguishing attributes, and denying those implies that the being is no different from non-existence.

Through this study, the Shaykh calls attention to the danger of Ta‘ṭīl, the importance of affirming Allah’s Names and Attributes as revealed, and the role of scholars like Al-Bukhāri in defending Tawḥīd using the infallible sources — Qur’ān and authentic Sunnah — with the understanding of the Salaf.
