President Donald Trump continued a decades-long trend of bypassing Congress on military action by approving U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites on June 21. Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press, Vice President J.D. Vance defended the decision, saying Trump acted within his authority “to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,” and emphasized that the “surgical strike” was not a step toward a prolonged conflict. “We’re not at war with Iran,” Vance said. “We’re at war with Iran’s nuclear program.”
