DeSantis Says ‘Hit the Gas’ If Protesters Threaten You — LA Incident Sparks Debate Over Self-Defense Rights

Los Angeles, California, June 17, 2025 — A protester in Los Angeles suffered leg injuries after attempting to block a car in an intersection. The driver accelerated and hit the individual. Police are currently investigating and may press charges.

On Jesse Watters Primetime, Watters remarked, “Protesters are clogging the streets coast to coast. This protester tried to block a car in an intersection, and the driver hit the gas… They might just throw the book at the driver, but if that was in Florida, different story.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis weighed in:

“If you're driving on one of those streets and a mob comes and surrounds your vehicle and threatens you, you have a right to flee for your safety. And so if you drive off and you hit one of these people, that's their fault for impinging on you.
You don't have to sit there and just be a sitting duck and let the mob grab you out of your car and drag you through the streets.”

While Florida law explicitly covers situations involving vehicle self-defense, it’s important to note that any person, anywhere, has the right to defend themselves if they reasonably believe they are in danger of physical harm. However, legal interpretations and consequences can vary by state and situation.
