Chetumal (from the Mayan: Cháak te' éemal, "There where the rains fall") is a Mexican city, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo and the seat of the municipality of Othón P. Blanco, located on the Yucatán Peninsula on the shores of Chetumal Bay. It was founded under the name of Payo Obispo (in honor of Payo Enríquez de Rivera, bishop of Guatemala and viceroy of New Spain) and known as such from 1898 to 1937, the year in which it received its current name.
