On April 10, 2025, at 10:25 a.m., Fresno Police Department Officers responded to the fax Manchester transit center following a fax bus supervisor's radio call about a woman holding a knife. Officer #1 arrived at the fax Manchester transit center and located the woman with the knife, later identified as 39-year-old Joanna Lopez. Officer #1 told bystanders to step out of the way and instructed Lopez to drop the knife. Lopez did not comply and began to walk toward a 68-year-old woman who had just departed a fax bus.

While holding a knife with a 6-inch blade, Lopez grabbed the elderly victim and used her as a human shield. Officer #1 gave Lopez repeated commands to drop the knife and warned that she may be shot. Lopez was unresponsive to the officer's commands and continued to hold the elderly victim at knifepoint. Officer #1 discharged his service weapon. The victim, who was physically unharmed, fell backward when Lopez released her grip. A second officer moved the victim to safety. Lopez continued holding the knife until it was retrieved by officer #1. Officers began medical aid, including the use of CPR, until the arrival of paramedics. Lopez was transported to the hospital where she later died. No bystanders or animals were harmed during this incident.
