Emperor Diocletian Tells His Story of Bringing Peace to Rome

I, Emperor Diocletian, emerged from humble beginnings, rising through the ranks of the Roman army to become one of its most esteemed commanders. In AD 284, the empire was plunged into chaos with the death of Emperor Carinus. In response to this crisis, I was hailed as emperor by the troops in the East, marking the beginning of my reign.

My reign was marked by significant reforms aimed at restoring stability to the empire. I implemented a new system of government known as the Tetrarchy, dividing the empire into four administrative regions, each ruled by an emperor and his deputy. This system helped to decentralize power and improve governance, leading to a period of relative peace and prosperity known as the Diocletianic Restoration.

However, my reign was not without its challenges. I faced threats from both within and without, including invasions by barbarian tribes and internal revolts. In AD 303, I issued the infamous Edict of Diocletian, which aimed to suppress the growing influence of Christianity within the empire. This led to a period of widespread persecution of Christians, which would have lasting repercussions for the empire.

In AD 305, I made the unprecedented decision to abdicate the throne, retiring to my palace in Split, Croatia. This marked the first voluntary abdication of a Roman emperor and paved the way for the eventual collapse of the Tetrarchy system.

Though my reign was marked by controversy and conflict, I am remembered as a strong and capable leader who sought to bring stability and order to a troubled empire. My reforms laid the groundwork for the Byzantine Empire and ensured the survival of Roman civilization for centuries to come.
